Sandpaper Letter

Introduce letter sound by using Sandpaper Letter (3PL)

I am not a native speaker so please kindly don’t challenge my accent. And this is one of the  effective way to introduce/ Revision letter sound to the young child.

This is the basic part of learning letter sounds by using Montessori 3PL method.

The name of this teaching method is called 3 period name lesson. And it is widely used in Montessori Curriculum. This is one of the effective way to let the children learn the name of object/sound. It seems a little bit boring when using this method, but some educators state that this is the good way which let the child focus on what they are going to learn.

Through the presentation the child can understand the letter formation (by tracing the sandpaper letter and have the tactile feeling) and the letter sound . Traditionaly there are no songs in this method but I found this is hard for the child to remeber so you will find I used some songs to let the child recall her memory.

One more thing, Montessori stressed that it is no need to praise the children becasue when the children work with the material, they will gain the happiness by themselves (internally). However, sometimes I find that children need support and praise, and a smile/ wording that can encourage them keep going. Why not?

1st Period, Introduce the sounds

2nd Period, Have the child to regconize each sound

3rd Period, Ask the child to read/say the letter sound

Fly Fly Butterfly

Fly fly butterfly,

Fly fly butterfly,

Fly fly butterfly,

Fly up in the sky so high.

My Abbie loved catching the toy butterfly when she was few months old. Then I sang the song with the toy butterfly. You might spot that I moved the butterfly randomly in front of Abbie, becasue I want to let her have some eye-hand co-ordination exercise, encourage her fine motor skill when she was grabbing the toy and using both hands. The most important thing was “We are having fun“!

Weekly Letter Sound c for we are clicking castanets…… (Part 2)

This is defintely not a good example but I really want to share with others, you will find how crazy I am.

I tried to introduce the song related to the letter sound /c/ and I love the song from Jolly Phonics “we are clicking castanets“. I prepared the castanets (I brought it from Tom Lee $50) and showed in front of Abbie. I hoped that she would enjoy singing the song with me and the castanets. However, she seemed don’t know what’s going on……Perhaps, she was wondering what is in front of her and the TV was quite distract.

This activity is not suit for babies but for toddlers, parents may try using the song to introduce or reinforce the letter sound.

For Letterland users may use the clever cat song but for my experience children love “we are clicking castanets” more.

Minuet

Take it out 抽取物品

Babies love to take something out from the jar when they are between 5 to 9 months old. It can help them to refine eye-hand co-ordination, using both hands and fine motor skill……

So what can parents do? What kind of activity can work with your little one?

Cookery Activity – Making Sandwhiches

It is fun for doing cookery activity with the children. They love this kind of activity and it is easily to notice that all of the young kids have the instrinic motivation to learn & work.

When I introduce the indgredients we used to make sandwhiches. The older children asked me “why there is no baby chick come from an egg?” It generates their curiosty to make a question. “Good question!” I replied.

I have some children take part in peeling the eggs.

Then some children smash the eggs with the mayonnaise.

Then I have them to cut the whole slice of bread into half. Some of them like to make retangualr shape and some of them like to make triangualr shape. I just let them to cut what shape they want. (Luckily no one ask me to cut a circle!!)

Of course using a real knife to cut is very dangerous and we should let the children know that they are allow to use knife only when the adult accompany with.

The children learn a lot from the activity. At least they can tell me “I want to make two triangles/ rectangles ^^”

Music Trial Class

Remark: This is just what I feel. The playgroup is good but not my cup of tea! If any mistakes about the teaching concept please let me know and I always welcome any comments which help me improve. ^^

Last weekend, me and Abbie went to the learning centre to have a trial lesson about music. Honestly, I was quite disappointed and felt sorry to Abbie because of wasting her time >.<

As we went there late perhaps we missed the warm up part. When we rushed into the classroom, the class was playing pee-ka-boo and the teacher claimed that it can train the children Object Permanence however she didn’t explain what it is.

“Object Permanence” which simply means “out of sight out of mind”. It is acquired by human infants from 8 to 12 months of age and there are 6 stages of Object Permanence.

And obivously she played pee-ka-boo with the see-through scarft is  suit for 4-8 months old infants.

And most of the babies are older than 8 months some of them are 14 months. Although my girl is 7.5 months old, she has already understand it.

Using partially hidden concept, indicating knowledge that the whole object is still there (mommy/hand)

After that we played the song named “jasmine” and the teacher had the parents hold/ assist the babies walk and count 8 beats then stop. She said that can help the children learn phrasing.

Then what we do were listening the music and sang the songs with shaking the bells. But it was impossible to listen the music when the bells were shaked coz too noisy. And the songs were too fast to sing.

The bells are fit for Abbie to put into her mouth >.<

Shaking the bells and singing songs.

Lastly, what we did were putting babies in the blanket then rock them and blowing the bubbles.

See! I can rock my Abbie with one hand and take a picture with the other hand ^^

Bubble time!! My silly Abbie, she doesn’t know what’s going on >.<

There were some points I feel uncomfortable with

  • Teacher is using non proper English, as I said that I don’t mind teacher who is using Cantonese but please don’t use non proper language. Since baby is senstitive to language, Adult should speak proper language in front of baby. (Interestingly, the center’s staff admit that the teacher is not good at English)
  • Age range of the class is from newborn to 18 months. I think they should split the class at least 6-12 months and 13-18 months. Huge difference between 0 and 18 months and what they need is obviously difference.
  • The teacher’s professionalism. “Is the teacher trained?”I asked. The staff replied she is trained. “How they trained?”I asked again. Then ……

*Summary: Teachers and Staff are very nice. Environment is OK big enough for babies to move. The program content is not what I want for, it consists of songs and activities but ……. The teacher is nice but …… *

Not to crib

When I introduce this concept for my friends who are having babies, they thought I am crazy. Why I don’t set an area then put the baby in such as playpen/ crib……that will limit the accidents happen? I  said “Defintely Not”.

As I always tell parents, please remove the obstacles and make your child free to move whenever and wherever they want.

Now my Abbie loves her sleeping place very much. I just put the mattress on the mat and around the mattress I put the cushions. It is safe for her to sleep and play and explore. When she wakes up she will try to grab the edge of my bed and wake me up too. Instead of crying like another babies to get attention. Of course she seldoms cry for attention. She loves to move around our home and dig out interesting things.

Just a little step,

  • help your child to be independent
  • build up confident
  • enhance your child motor skill
  • encourage them to explore which is the essential element for intelligent development……
